Understanding Impairment Awards and Evaluations

At Nuclear Weapons Advocates, we understand the physical toll that comes with working in high-risk environments. For former nuclear weapons and uranium workers, impairment awards provide meaningful financial support to address the long-term impacts of their service. Under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA), these awards offer compensation for the permanent loss of function of any body part or organ due to an illness recognized by the program. The amount awarded is based on the percentage of impairment, with $2,500 awarded per each 1% of impairment, up to a maximum of $250,000. This compensation is on top of what recipients may have already received through EEOICPA or the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA).

Why Regular Impairment Evaluations Matter:

If you hold a U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) white medical benefits card, regular impairment evaluations can be crucial in maximizing your benefits. Eligible individuals are entitled to a free impairment evaluation every two years, or sooner if a new or related condition arises under EEOICPA.
